Undermanned Laoag just too much for Coast Guard in V-League opener

As expected, Laoag’s A-list outside hitters Jorelle Singh and Grethcel Soltones overwhelmed Coast Guard with one powerful hit after another in the 13th Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference opener Saturday at the PhilSports Arena.

The recruitment coup of Laoag orchestrated by its head coach, Nes Pamilar, proved to be a genius move as the duo combined for 30 big points as they rolled past the opponent, 25-8, 25-15, 25-16.

Coast Guard managed to show flashes of brilliance at the onset of the second and third sets but its lack of firepower barred the squad from maintaining its early lead, eventually leading to its first loss.

Nobody on the Lady Dolphins’ side finished in double digits with Hazel Mea and Lalyn Garcua tallying only 6 and 4 points, respectively.

Even without the services of Jema Galanza and Aiko Urdas—both fulfilling their duties in the UAAP beach volley tourney—the Power Smashers’ depth tided them through as they made use of players like Jovielyn Prado and Kat Magsumbol to fill in the void.

In an earlier report with FOX Sports, Pamilar reasoned out that having left wing attackers of Singh, Soltones, Galanza and Prado’s caliber has something to do with some players missing a couple of games due to their commitment to their respective collegiate teams.

Next in Laoag’s plate is Alyssa Valdez-led Bureau of Customs, a team that defeated them in an exhibition match in 4 sets Thursday night. — By Mac Dionisio
