“Nothing to lose but everything to gain.”
That is how UST assistant coach looks at the Golden Tigresses’ import-less campaign in the upcoming Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference.
The Espana spikers had a rather forgettable stint in the Collegiate Conference, but with their seniors, including the returning Pam Lastimosa, suiting up this time, hopes are high that UST will make a dent in the competitive field.
Fernandez is happy with how the Tigresses have been progressing recently, sharing that the team has been building chemistry not seen in their previous campaigns in the UAAP.
“Actually masaya sila kasi syempre ang tagal nga rin nilang hindi nakita yung mga old teammates nila,” he explained. “Medyo sluggish pa nung una yung galaw e. Kasi syempre yung mga ibang mga players matagal din napahinga.”
“Nung time naman na yun, puro kami correction and polishing. Ngayon, nasa transition and scrimmage na kami sa training. Na-aadapt naman nila kung ano yung tinuturo and nagiging smooth unti-unti yung galaw nila,” he added.
With an all UST line-up, Fernandez hopes that the girls would get challenged when they go head-to-head with veteran-laden teams armed with foreign reinforcements.
“Sabi ko nga, igi-give lang namin yung very best namin. Nothing lose but everything to gain kasi malalakas nga yung mga teams na andito,” he said. “Basta every game i-give niyo lang yung best ninyo. Syempre hindi naman porket sumali tayo dito alam na natin na wala tayong import, talo na kagad. Hindi naman dapat ganun yung mentality.”
“Kahit may import o wala, kahit magka import din naman kami, di naman pwedeng dedepende lagi sa import kasi dalawa lang din naman yun, apat yung natitira. Kailangan maging as a team kayo kasi anim yung naglalaro dyan e. Ibig sabihin yung teamwork, kailangan mas mag work pa especially dun sa team namin ngayon sa UST,” he added.
With a tough competition ahead, Fernandez sees this as an opportunity for the team to prepare for the upcoming UAAP Season 79.
“Experience yung magegain nga namin. Actually si UST community, UST yung host (UAAP) so medyo mataas yung expectations. Yung experience tsaka yung mga games, yun yung hinahabol namin talaga.” — By Joyce Palad
