Why does Laoag have so many outside hitters? Nes Pamilar explains

Just how rich is Laoag in outside hitters heading into the season-ending Reinforced Conference?

Well, the Power Smashers just lived up to their name by adding Open Conference MVP Grethcel Soltones and Collegiate Conference champs Jorelle Singh and Aiko Urdas to help key holdovers Jovie Prado and Jema Galanza.

On paper, the lineup is power-smashing and even without an import, could be on of the tournament’s top contenders.

But why the logjam at the same position? Coach Nes Pamilar says it was done for a purpose.

“Yung composition ng Laoag, pagka-ayun lang ginamit mo, may time na magiging kulang kami. Kaya ko sila binuo ng ganun,” said the mentor. “Hindi sila magkaka-sabay-sabay. Kung kukuha ka ng eksakto, hindi kami aabot.”

Galanza is sure to miss at least 3 games for the Power Smashers due to her commitment to play for Adamson in the ongoing UAAP women’s beach volleyball tournament while Prado will be busy preparing for the upcoming NCAA tourney.

Pamilar, who handles the La Salle men’s team at the same time, added he won’t tap an import because processing papers will be near impossible with so short a time.

And with almost all teams pushing the level-up button in time for the Reinforced Conference, the seasoned tactician says Laoag will take it step by step.

“Hindi pa natin masasabi, hindi naman overnight yung volleyball e, tingnan natin. HIntayin natin kung anong magiging resulta,” he said. “One game at a time pipilitin namin kung anong mangyayari.” — By John Chester Fajardo
