Alyssa Valdez, ex-Ateneo stars to face Pocari spikers, Cha Cruz in Qatar

Volleyball stars are set to invade Doha, Qatar anew to give overseas Filipinos a chance to meet past and present stars of the UAAP and the Shakey’s V-League.

Three-time UAAP MVP Alyssa Valdez, back-to-back NCAA MVP Grethcel Soltones and former La Salle stars Cha Cruz, Michele Gumabao and Melissa Gohing join a horde of spikers who will strut their stuff in an all-star game this weekend at the Hamad Bin Al Attiyah Arena.

Expat Volleyball League Qatar founder JhayR Paz says they are bringing the UAAP experience to Doha to inspire the Filipino community who have been intently following what’s happening in Philippine sports.

“Sa pagsiklab ng volleyball fans, dito sa Qatar napakaraming OFW na mahilig sa sports,” he told FOX Sports. “As a volleyball player, naisip ko ang isang concept na nagbibigay ng tuwa sa maraming tao na makita ang kanilang mga idolo.”

Paz and his group were also behind Valdez’s first visit to the Middle East earlier this year, which was followed by visits from V-League champs Pocari Sweat and PSL powerhouse F2 Logistics.

Also joining Valdez in this trip are key players from the Lady Warriors like Myla Pablo, Irish Tolenada and Gyzelle Sy, and former Ateneo mainstays Amy Ahomiro, Mae Tajima, Dzi Gervacio, Jem Ferrer and Ella de Jesus. — By Josiah Albelda
