Minh Do Thi leads Vietnam to big win over undermanned Foton

Foton Pilipinas put up a gallant stand, but the absence of import Lindsay Stalzer proved to be too much to overcome.

The home team bowed to Thongtin Lien Viet Post Bank, 18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 12-25, 8-15, to end their preliminary round record with a 1-1 slate in the 2016 Asian Women’s Club Championship at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan, Laguna.

Ariel Usher, Foton’s other foreign reinforcement, led with 20 points off 15 hits, 2 blocks and 3 aces while Jov Gonzaga and Jaja Santiago scored 16 and 13 markers, respectively.

It was a tight matchup throughout, but Foton was unable to find an antidote to the explosive Minh Do Thi, who terrorized the Filipinas’ defense with 29 points off 22 kills, 5 blocks and 2 aces.

The wards of coach Fabio Menta badly needed Stalzar, the efficient American who sat out the game due to a back injury.

The Vietnamese had 58 attacks and 15 blocks while also drawing a combined 25 points from Thao Tran Thi and Ly Lhin Tran Ton Nu.

Vietnam will next face Pocari Sweat of Hong Kong on Monday while Foton takes a bye. — By Joyce Palad
