UP fortifies defense to blast Baste, enter V-League semis

UP punctuated its up-and-down Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference quarterfinals campaign with a beatdown of San Sebastian College, 25-17, 23-25, 25-5, 25-18, Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

With the win, the Lady Maroons barged into the Final Four, where they will be joined by NU and FEU.

Flaunting rock-solid defense at the net, the Diliman squad was never seriously threatened, using 11 block points, to advance with a 3-2 card.

Team captain Kathy Bersola led all scorers with 20 points for UP, which also got double-digit production from 3 other spikers.

On the other hand, Grethcel Soltones and Denice Lim each posted 15 markers for the Lady Stags.

After suffering their third defeat in 5 outings, San Sebastian would have to wait for the result of the Ateneo-FEU matchup later Wednesday night.

A victory by the Lady Eagles means goodbye to the Lady Stags while a Lady Tamaraws’ win will arrange a winner-take-all battle for the last semifinal slot between Ateneo and San Sebastian on Saturday. — By John Chester Fajardo
