Ateneo proves there’s life after Alyssa Valdez with shock win v NU

The Ateneo Lady Eagles just did what every critic did not expect — tarnished the defending champions NU Lady Bulldogs’ unblemished record in the 13 Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference in three sets.

Three sets. Let that sink in.

With their backs on the wall, the Katipunan-based squad hacked out a miraculous, 25-15, 27-25, 25-17 at the San Juan Arena earlier proving they are a contending team even without Alyssa Avaldez, shocking the defending champions in the process.

“We’re so happy kasi nakita na sa loob ng court yung teamwork namin nagawa lahat ng pinaghirapan namin sa training,” Ateneo captain Michele Morente said in a post-game interview.

Morente’s 20 points powered Ateneo’s biggest win in post-Alyssa Valdez era as Lady Bulldog Jaja Santiago was held down to 10 points through the night.

More importantly, the 2-2 Lady Eagles booked a playoff showdown against the idle TIP Lady Engineers on Monday for the last spot in the second round.

Earlier this conference, the Lady Engineers upset Ateneo in a three sets in their first matchup and the Lady Eagle captain is looking forward to get back at the team who handed their first loss.
