The FEU Lady Tamarraws remained undefeated in the Group B of the 13th Shakey’s V-League Open Conference after proving they have more heart fending off the young UP Lady Maroons, 27-25, 25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 15-8, Saturday at the San Juan Arena.
Handing UP’s (3-1) first loss of the conference, the Lady Tamarraws enter the next stage of tournament with a good headstart as they will carry over a 2-0 record in the second round. UP on the other will carry over a 1-1 record.
More importantly, the huge win takes the Tamarraws’ confidence up in cloud nine as after surviving a resurgent UP’s rally and controlled the last set with ease.
“Sabi ko nung fifth set ‘kalimutan niyo yung apat na set dahil wala na yan, ito fifth set dito natin malalaman kung nasaan natalaga yung team natin.’ Good thing naka-recover kami,” FEU head coach Shaq delos Santos said.
The Tamarraws trailed through most of the first four sets, but made sure they took the driver’s seat in the decider.
They started the 5th set with 5-0 advantage, and put the icing on the cake via an 8-2 run when the Maroons reduced the deficit to 1 point at 7-6.
Four Tams breached the double-digit mark led by Tono Rose Basas’s game-high 24 points.
Team captain Remi Palma, Jerrili Malabanan and Bernadeth Pons added 15, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, UP’s duo of Isa Molde and Diana Carlos had 20 points apiece while Nicole Tiamzon and Justine Dorog had 10 and 14 points, respectively. – By John Chester Fajardo
