With NBA legend Kobe Bryant due for a return to the Philippines this weekend, UP veteran Kathy Bersola could not hide her anticipation.
“Excited na ako pumunta siya dito,” she told FOX Sports after helping the Lady Maroons sweep Iriga in the 13th Shakey’s V-League Open Conference Monday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
After a successful 20-season career with the Los Angeles Lakers, Bryant retired after the 2015-16 season and will be back in the country again for the Mamba Mentality tour.
“Since Grade 2 pa,” she said of when she started to be a Bryant fan. “Paminsan-minsan kasi nakikilaro ako ng basketball sa mga brothers ko sa labas ng bahay namin. One day, nanonod sila ng NBA, sakto Laker game yun. Siya agad yung una kong napansin. Bata pa ako nun. Siya lang yung napansin ko ever since.”
Unfortunately for Bersola, she won’t be able to catch her childhood idol in person as they will face NU in a crucial match on Saturday.
This inability to meet Bryant, she says, will only fuel her to bring her A-game against the Lady Bulldogs.
“Kung pwede nga lang, sabihan ko si Kobe na pumunta sya dito at manood nalang ng game namin.” she exclaimed with a huge grin on her face. — By John Bryan Ulanday
