You might not see Gretchen Ho playing indoor volleyball in the near future, but she’s preparing something special for her supporters and beach volley fans.
Very busy with her hosting duties for Mornings at ANC and Daily Serve, the former Ateneo stalwart admitted she had to choose between the sport and media work because it’s hard to do both at the same time.
“I feel like if you want to really excel in indoor volleyball, you have to do it full time,” she told FOX Sports. “I do (miss it), but it has a different demand to it. There’s a number of games for how many months. It was hard for me to focus. I just had to pick one.”
After helping the Lady Eagles to back-to-back UAAP finals stints in Seasons 74 and 75, Ho went on to play for Petron in the Philippine SuperLiga and even served as the league’s ambassador at one time.
But as her hosting and media career has blossomed, Ho has seen her volleyball career take a backseat, especially in the last year.
Now, she hopes to see a little action in the sand, being one of the founders of the Beach Volleyball Republic, a group of athletes going around the country to promote the sport and some of the Philippines’ tourist destinations.
“It’s much more flexible,” said Ho of beach volleyball training. “Mas kaya i-balance with my hosting work and media.”
To further her interest in beach volleyball, the popular spiker said she is cooking something up with the rest of the BVR ladies.
“In the next month, something is gonna happen, so I’m fixing my schedule right now in order for me to be able to join BVR,” she said.
“Next month you’ll be seeing something new. Abangan niyo nalang kung ano yung bago na yun. Hopefully, pag mangyari yun, magiging part na ulit ako ng BVR. Right now, I’m just (working) behind the scenes and supporting the team in whatever way that I can. But I’m so excited to get back to the court. I miss it, my body misses it,” she ended. — By Joyce Palad
