CAGAYAN — Top seeds swept their respective pools in Day 1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Beach Volleyball Republic Invitational at the picturesque Anguib Beach in Sta. Ana here.
Brazil 1 of Pool A, Pool B’s USA 1, Thailand-USA of Pool C and Pool D’s New Zealand all scored 2 impressive wins each as action heated up in this 12-team tournament.
Mimi Amaral and Bruna Figueirado of Brazil 1 opened festivities with a 21-13, 21-8 domination of the Singapore 1 pair of Tan Shiang Theng and Ong Wei Yu before blanking Filipinas Jennifer Cosas and Dij Rodriguez, 21-16, 21-5.
Meanwhile, USA 1’s Jennifer Snyder and Chara Harris proved to be unstoppable in Pool B after tripping Kong Cheuk yee and To Wing Tung of Hong Kong 1, 21-13, 21-17, and edging BVR founders Charo Soriano and Bea Tan, 21-5, 15-21, 15-5.
In Pool C action, Thai spiker Yupa Phokongploy and American Rachel Sherman were too much for Singapore 2’s Lau Yue Ting and Chong Hui Hui, 21-5, 21-9, and the Brazil 2 tandem of Rupia Inck and Erica Adachi, 21-17, 21-7.
Completing the cast of early quarterfinalists were New Zealand’s Julia Tilley and Alice Bain, who downed Alexa Micek and Leah Hinkey of USA 2, 23-21, 21-17, and Hong Kong 1 pair Lo Wai Yan and Yeung Yuk Mei, 23-21, 21-13.
