Picking near the tailend of the first round of the 2016 Philippine SuperLiga Draft, Petron coach George Pascua said he intends to pluck a setter and a middle blocker from the cast of hopefuls he saw at the combine Tuesday.
Pascua’s Tri Activ Spikers are gunning for another PSL All-Filipino Conference tiara when the tournament begins on June 18 and the veteran mentor believes they are a couple of pieces away from regaining their deadly form.
“Yung setter na lang yung kulang namin dahil kumpleto na kami lahat. Isang setter tsaka if possible, isang middle (spiker),” he said after watching 20 aspirants do on-court drills and play in a scrimmage against PSL veterans.
“Lahat ng teams ngayon, balanse e,” he added. “Unpredictable yung mga teams ngayon. Unlike before, makikita mo na kaagad sa lineup pa lang kung sino maglalaban sa Finals.”
Pascua sure knows what he’s talking about, as he has banked on stars like Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Rachel Daquis and Aby Marano to bring championships to Petron.
But with the trio now gone from the Tri Activ Spikers, Pascua has gone to FEU to bolster his squad.
Joining Petron as “direct hires” in the upcoming conference are outside hitter Bernadeth Pons and middle blocker Remy Palma, two vital cogs of the Lady Tamaraws’ rise to the Final Four in UAAP Season 78.
“Okay naman yung skills nila,” said the coach of the duo. “Highly competitive naman sila. Madali naman silang nakapag-gel sa Petron kasi nakikita naman nila sa FEU kami nag-eensayo. So may idea na sila.”
Palma, who has been known to play mind games against her opponents in the collegiate ranks, shared elation at the development.
“Nakaka-excite na nakakakaba kasi mas mataas na level na ng competition,” she said. “Pero gagawin ko pa rin challenge ito and experience para madala ko sa last playing year ko po sa UAAP.” — By Joyce Palad
