Champion couple: Marck Espejo proud of Finals MVP Kim Dy

They didn’t get to go out like a regular couple the entire run of UAAP Season 78 volleyball but men’s division 3-time MVP and Ateneo star Marck Espejo was a witness to La Salle spiker Kim Dy’s patience and hard work.

Dy, who hardly saw action in Round 1 for the Lady Spikers, became the catalyst to her team’s first victory over Ateneo in 2016 as she emerged as a secret weapon for Ramil de Jesus.

The opposite spiker continued to do wonders for La Salle for the rest of the tournament before exploding with 17 points in Game 3 of the last round, earning her the finals MVP trophy on top of her 1st title in the collegiate ranks.

On helping to keep Dy’s morale up, Espejo shares, “Mino-motivate ko siya. Sinasabi ko na dadating ang panahon na gagamitin din siya. At pag ginamit siya, dapat di niya sayangin. Sabi ko pana-panahon lang ‘yan.”

Unlike Espejo, who rocked the men’s volleyball division since he debuted, the Lady Spiker took the long route and only got to show her spiking prowess that won her a Juniors MVP plum a couple of years back.

The frustrations of the rigid training and having little playing time in her first 2 years has paid off for Dy now that she is set to become La Salle’s first offensive option moving forward.

“Sobrang proud ako sa kanya kasi na-exceed niya ‘yung expectations ng mga tao. Kahit sub siya o off the bench, sa konting panahon, ang dami niyang na-contribute sa La Salle,” said Espejo a couple of days after he and the Ateneo men’s volleyball team notched its second straight UAAP title.

Though the 2 are constantly seen communicating with each other via social media, it was surprising to know that they opted not to go out as much during the season as they focused on their respective academic and volleyball careers.

Emerging on top of the UAAP as champions, the couple can now let out a sigh of relief after proving that setting one’s priorities is key to achieving their goals.

“Ako rin sinasabi ko rin na focus muna sa responsibilities kasi malapit na rin matapos UAAP. Patience lang,” he shared.

“Worth it naman kahit papaano. Masaya kasi champion ako at masaya din ako para sa kanya. Pwede na lumabas. Pwede na kami magkita ulit,” he closed. — By Mac Dionisio
