On-target La Salle denies erratic Ateneo for 9th UAAP crown

Paint the town green because the championship is back in Taft.

La Salle bucked a sordid start to turn back Ateneo and win the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball title in front of a record crowd Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Spikers drilled less spikes, but took care of the ball and defended well at the net and on the floor en route to the 4-set win and their ninth women’s crown in league history.

A record 22, 848 people trooped to the Big Dome to witness Game 3, which was the last UAAP outing of several stars like La Salle’s Ara Galang, Mika Reyes and Cyd Demecillo, and the Lady Eagles’ Alyssa Valdez and Amy Ahomiro.

Ateneo zoomed to a 10-1 lead in the opening set behind the hot hands of Valdez, but the Lady Spikers retaliated in the next 3, using a total team effort to frustrate the Lady Eagles and end the latter’s 3-peat bid.

The third set was a landslide for the ladies in green as they put on a block party to build an early lead and never look back.
