Despite immaturity issues hounding their campaign all season long, the young NU squad has managed to stave off elimination and booked their return to the Finals in the UAAP men’s volleyball tournament.
But former Bulldogs star spiker Peter Torres is setting his expectations low for the upcoming Finals rematch between his alma mater and Ateneo.
“Masasabi ko lang, di ganun kalaki yung ineexpect ko sa Finals, magiging masaya na siguro ako as a senior if makikita kong nakikipagdikitan sa Ateneo, sobrang proud na ako sa kanila,” he told FOX Sports.
Torres, who led the Bulldogs to 2 championships, thinks it would be hard for rookie-laden NU to topple powerhouse Ateneo, backstopped by reigning MVP Marck Espejo and top setter Ish Polvorosa, this season.
“Ateneo kasi, andyan na yan, sila na ang pinakamalakas, sana lang ipakita nila na yung best against Ateneo para mahasa yung team at maganda yung laban,” he said.
Nevertheless, Torres is already impressed of what the Bulldogs have accomplished the year after most of their veterans already graduated.
“Proud ako sa kanila kasi first year nila ngayon na wala kami, and mukhang positive naman yung progress nila,” he said. “Nakikita ko sa kanila, sobrang laking potential ng team, syempre simula pa lang nila, maganda yung nakikita kong future nila.”
NU is expected to lean on the leadership of fifth-year player and team captain Vince Mangulabnan anew, with the help of rising stars Madz Gampong and James Natividad. — By Jason Mercene
