Even after scoring 22 points in their big Final Four win over La Salle last Sunday, FEU top scorer Bernadeth Pons admitted she was not feeling well just minutes before the game.
“Nag-pain reliever ako before ng game,” she said after the Lady Tamaraws extended the series to a do-or-die tiff on Wednesday. “Okay naman kasi parang pag game naman hindi ko na ine-entertain yung pain. Nilalaro ko nalang.”
Pons has gone through a handful of injuries throughout the season and the Bacolod native playing through pain against the Lady Spikers might be one of the reasons why the Morayta belles almost lost in straight sets.
Fortunately for FEU, Pons found her groove soon enough, even dominating the third and fourth sets as the Lady Tamaraws lived another day.
With the win, FEU gets a chance to shut La Salle out of the finals for the first time in 8 years.
But Pons doesn’t want to look too far ahead, stressing they might celebrate for the night but get back to work quickly the next day.
“Sobrang saya namin kasi sobrang tagal na hindi natatalo ng FEU ang La Salle tapos ngayon nalang ulit. Kaya ayun, sobrang saya namin lalo na semis pa tapos do-or-die pa laban namin kanina,” she said. “Pero siyempre ngayon sobrang saya namin, pero pagdating naman sa training kailangan na ulit mag-focus sa gagawin namin para sa game.”
This early, though, she believes they have what it takes to book a ticket to a finals showdown with defending champion Ateneo.
“Parang halos lahat ng tao expected nila La Salle-Ateneo. Pero kami tahimik lang kami, mas gagawin namin yung best namin kasi goal din namin na mag-finals,” she said. “Naniniwala kami na kayang kaya namin umabot sa finals.” — By Arylle Magtalas
