Learning her lessons, Mika Reyes won’t let poor outing happen again

To cap what was a low-scoring day for Mika Reyes, she ended the Ateneo-La Salle second-round battle last weekend with an unfortunate service error.

Due to the loss, Reyes and the rest of the Lady Spikers slipped to second and momentarily lost the mental advantage they got when they swept their archrivals in Round 1.

Talking about the heartbreaking 5-set loss, the middle blocker says, “Out of focus talaga nun eh. Nadala lang talaga. Naka-point kasi kami nun tapos after nun serve ko.”

It looks as if it is already a lesson learned especially for Reyes, however, as the veteran spiker delivered in La Salle’s matchup against NU Wednesday wherein she scored 10 points behind Kim Dy’s 25 and Majoy Baron’s 13.

More than finishing in double digits, the St. Scholastica’s College alum’s 4 service aces, including the game-clinching freebie, highlighted her desire to bounce back from a bad day.

On spending extra time in training to polish her serves, Reyes shares, “Lagi naman akong nago-overload sa service. Pero this time, may extra effort sa service during training kasi kailangan matuto sa mga pagkakamali lalo na sa previous game.”

“Nag focus ako sa service. Almost lahat naman kami ang dami naming service errors. Highlight lang talaga ‘yung akin kasi last point nila,” she added.

With the win, last year’s runners-up have regained their confidence and at the same time eliminating the Lady Bulldogs, the same team who handed them their first loss in Season 78.

Vowing to move on as a better athlete, Reyes says, “I guess ‘yun ‘yung bawi talaga. Hindi na pwede maulit ‘yun (sa Ateneo). Bilang senior, hindi ko na din hahayaan maulit ‘yun.”

Though La Salle has now achieved its 1st goal of making it to the next round, the road is not about to get easier as it is paired with peaking FEU in the Final Four.

For Reyes, more than avenging their loss to NU, winning their last outing in the second round gives them the springboard they need to make a splash and book a seat in the finale.

“Para malaman ulit ‘yung mga mali namin at maitama, ‘yun ang matututunan namin sa game na ito. Special game ito kasi papunta na kaming semis. Nakita namin kung ano ang kailangan namin i-improve,” she said.
