Kathy Bersola wasn’t happy when coach Jerry Yee subbed her out early in UP’s hard-earned victory over UE before the Holy Week break.
But rather than sulk, the senior middle blocker took the benching as a challenge to be better as the Lady Maroons near the Final Four as surprise championship contenders.
“I took it as a challenge kasi alam kong may tiwala siya sakin and gusto lang niya akong i-challenge na maging consistent,” she said. “Alam ko naman. Hindi pwedeng ganun ako magsisimula ng laro kasi captain ako tsaka senior ako.”
“Pinapaalala lang niya na ang opportunity, sandaling sandali lang yan during a game. Medyo na-down ako pero ayun, move on. Alam kong kaya ko bumawi.”
After tearing her ACL in Season 77, Bersola has not been as dominant and there was actually a stretch of games where she was inconsistent.
But with tough outings against NU (March 30), FEU (April 3) and UST (April 10) remaining in their schedule, the Lady Maroons need the Makati Science HS alum to be at her best down the stretch.
Bersola vows to give it all for the Diliman side.
“Syempre looking forward na to the next game. Very important last 3 games ng elims. Babawi pa ako sa team. Mas lalo ako magwo-work hard sa training. And most importantly, I need to watch my mind. Di ko pwede hayaan sarili ko na magspiral down,” she added.
Asked what motivates her this season, Bersola honestly replied, “The thought of being champions inspires me the most.”
“Yung naiimagine ko na hawak ko yung trophy tapos may confetti everywhere and yung big smiles ng teammates and coaches ko. I’m also motivated by my family, my team, the UP supporters, and God. We don’t feel pressured because we’ve learned to take it one game at a time and just do our best always. More inspired than pressured.” — By Joyce Palad
