Ateneo’s Jho Maraguinot opens up: Siguro nagkulang sa ‘heart strong’

As the rest of her teammates struggled against UP, it was Jho Maraguinot who, along with Alyssa Valdez, desperately tried to keep Ateneo afloat in their UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball match-up Sunday night.

Alas, Maraguinot’s efforts went for naught as the Lady Eagles bowed to the Lady Maroons in 4 sets at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.

The Batangas native, who finished with 15 points, admitted the team lacked the fortitude to battle the odds they faced.

“Well siguro nagkulang sa ‘heart strong’ ngayon tsaka yung confidence din namin (nagkulang),” she said. “Tsaka yung sinabi rin samin kanina, the willingness to win parang nababawasan na ngayon.”

As the defending champions stare at a rare 2-game losing streak, Maraguinot said they have to loosen up and return to the “happy” team that won the past couple of UAAP championships.

“Sobrang focused namin nakakalimutan namin mag-relax. Pag-nauunahan, kailangan isa isa lang. Kailangan mo ng patience sa loob,” she said. “Sobrang nag-iisip na kami sa loob na parang ‘ay hindi na kami pwede mag-error kasi kailangan namin makapuntos, kailangan namin manalo.'” — By Arylle Magtalas
