As Ateneo suffered its 2nd straight loss in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament, top setter Jia Morado struggled to make plays as her teammates delivered faulty reception again.
But the reigning Best Setter refused to blame the Lady Eagles’ floor defenders, saying the latter’s adjustments have been hard, too.
“I’m really trying my best to set it up,” she said after the defending champs lost to UP Sunday. “Imagine yung dalawa naming libero converted from setter. Kahit sinong ilagay mo dun, mahihirap kung cinonvert sila ng ganun ng last-minute.”
Now that attacking their liberos with heavy service would be the template of their next opponents, Morado said Ateneo will definitely put focus on it when they resume practice Monday.
“Bigatan nila serve nila, magre-receive kami,” she stressed. “It’s something we can work on in training.”
The Lady Eagles got off to a relatively good start against the Lady Maroons in their matchup, but couldn’t summon the “happy, unity, heart strong” mantra they’ve brandished over the past 3 seasons when it mattered.
About this, Morado said they might have forgotten how to enjoy the game — a trademark of coach Tai Bundit.
“Siguro masyado rin kaming seryoso,” she said. “Nakalimutan din namin mag-relax. Nakalimutan namin kung paano maglaro. Masyado siguro namin pine-pressure sarili namin.”
“Pero kami as a team, manalo or matalo, together pa rin kami,” she added.
ado said they will use the lessons the team has learned in the past 2 losses to be better.
“We can’t expect to win all the time,” she shared. “At least, we know na kung ano mga weakness namin that we have to improve on.”
“Move on na lang kami sa next na kalaban. Sini-scout lang namin yung next na kalaban so one game at a time lang talaga.” — By Arylle Magtalas
