Coming into their much-awaited tussle with Ateneo on Saturday, La Salle star spiker Mika Reyes is sure of one thing: They’re better than their Season 77 iteration.
And knowing this has armed Reyes and the rest of the Lady Spikers with confidence that they can go toe-to-toe with the Lady Eagles, who are riding on a 24-game winning streak.
“Yes, we are more confident than last season,” she said. “Lahat nag-change. Siguro naman maga-agree yung mga tao sa akin na we’re better than last season.”
Reyes has been a big reason why the Taft squad are running 2nd so far with a 5-1 record, as the 6-foot middle blocker have shown more leadership and consistency for the team laden with youngsters.
“Inimprove ko lahat ng skills ko, physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually,” she told the press. “Kahit last playing year ko na, sobrang dami ko parin talagang kailangan iimprove.”
Facing their bitter rivals — a team they haven’t defeated since 2014 — Reyes still chooses to put no pressure on herself or any Lady Spiker for that matter.
For her, it’s just about going out ready and giving her best against the back-to-back defending champions.
Nevertheless, Reyes admits they exerted extra effort in preparing for the Lady Eagles.
“Siguro may extra lang talaga, siyempre sila yung undefeated. May gagawin lang siguro kami para sa team nila, kasi each and every team naman may gusto kaming gawin para matalo sila,” she said.
“Labanan nalang talaga kung sino yung mas tatagal sa amin sa loob ng court.” — By Arylle Magtalas
