After 51st straight loss, Vicente feels UE players don’t want him as coach

51 straight losses.

That’s the streak UE is mired in right now after they got plowed down anew, this time by Ateneo in straight sets Wednesday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament.

Lady Warriors head coach Francis Vicente, frustrated at another embarrassing performance by his team, could not help but think his players don’t want him as coach.

“Hindi nangyayari e, mahirap man sabihin, pero parang ayaw nila doon sa coach, parang ganun yung nakikita ko eh,” he told FOX Sports.

Vicente said he knew the Lady Eagles would be really tough to beat, but the only thing he expected from the UE spikers was just to put up a semblance of a fight. That did not happen.

“Supposed to be, ang expectations ko, siyempre Ateneo is a champion team, so yung expectation to win very steep ‘yan,” he said.

“Siyempre I’m the one who’s training them. Baka ayaw talaga nila tanggapin kung ano ako, kung paano mag-training.”

Vicente, who molded the likes of Alyssa Valdez, Kim Fajardo and Dindin Santiago in high school, has been known to be a strict coach.

But he has stressed that he has since mellowed down upon entering UE.

At this moment, the coach simply could not help but pity his players.

“For me, nakakapang hinayang yung tankgad nila kung hindi nila magagamit sa loob ng court, kung puro sa practice lang. Siguro dapat gawa nalang, wag na masyadong maraming satsat,” he said.

— By Arylle Magtalas
