3-time UAAP Best Setter Jem Ferrer talks about Morado-Fajardo comparisons

Ex-star Ateneo setter Jem Ferrer wants the Lady Eagles to do something drastic when they battle La Salle in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday.

Forget their conquest of the Lady Spikers last season.

“Ateneo as the defending champ, back to zero ulit lahat,” she told FOX Sports. “Kalimutan ang last season.”

“They need to focus sa bawat puntos. Good receive leads to good play. Kailangan nilang isiping kaya nila,” she added. “We all know na walang nawala sa 1st 6 ng dlsu. Ateneo nawalan ng 2 sa first 6 but yung mga pumalit, andyan si Alyssa para suportahan ang mga bata and double time dapat lahat sa loob.”

With sophomores Maddie Madayag and Bea De Leon stepping up for Ateneo, Ferrer admits that both middle blockers will have a big role in this match-up.

“They need to focus on their blockings bilang 1st line of defense yun. They must be consistent with their attacks also dahil for sure babantayan na si Alyssa ng La Salle.”

With both teams having equally talented spikers, Ferrer says that it won’t be just the spikers who’ll have a showdown.

“Ateneo-La Salle game, for me, nasa kamay ng setters ang laro. For Ateneo, I think they need to be more consistent sa receive,” she explained. “Actually, same with La Salle, dun naman mag sisimula lahat. Good match to, individually.”

Talking about setting duties, Ferrer also admired the talent of both setters from Ateneo and La Salle.

“Jia and Kim are both great setters in the country,” she said. “I’ve been reading comments such as Jia is compared to Nootsara (Thai setter), maybe Jia was able to adapt the Thai style setting (low fast set) because of coach Tai as her mentor.”

“Kim on the side, she’s compared to (Tina) Salak and (Rubie) De Leon when it comes to setting the ball and drop balls as well.”

With all the issues floating around the 2 setters, the 3-time UAAP Best Setter also shared her two cents on that.

“Honestly, tong mga batang to di naman nagpapaligsahan sa award,” stressed the former Ateneo stalwart.

“Nasa kung sino marunong magdala ng spikers. Since threat ang La Salle and Ateneo, pareho silang magaling kasi napapaganda nila ang mga bolang papunta sa spikers at napapadali nila buhay ng spikers nila.” — By Joyce Palad
