Defending champion Ateneo racked up another impressive win, blanking still-winless UE, 25-16, 25-17, 25-14, in the UAAP Season 78 men’s volleyball tournament Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
After back-to-back 5-setters, the Blue Spikers have gone on to score 2 straight sweeps and coach Oliver Almadro said he’s glad with how his wards have rebounded.
“I’m happy na nagrerespond naman yung team,” he said. “I’m happy na yung mentality ng players ko is not towards the championship right away. Ang mentality nila is to play the best we can every game.”
“Yung teams like Adamson and La Salle, nagpapasalamat kami dahil nalaman pa namin yung kulang pa namin. So from there we maximize pa our strengths,” he added.
About to battle NU in a finals rematch this weekend, Almadro admitted they’ve used their last 2 matches to work on chinks in their armor.
“Yung game namin (against UE) will be a stepping stone towards our game against NU.” he said. “Hindi pwedeng nanalo kami ngayon, ‘yun na ang ilalaro namin sa Saturday. We still have to prepare well. Siyempre NU ‘yan ibang usapan ‘yan. Nagback to back na ‘yan.”
Knowing that the their Saturday tussle is one of the most awaited match-ups this season, Almadro wants the Blue Spikers to use the next days to focus and zone in on their preparation for the Bulldogs.
“Mga volleyball fans hinihintay na yun. Kami naman, nandito kami sa UAAP to give our school the pride na meron kami, so we have to still work hard and we’re looking forward still sa game na iyon,” he shared. — By Arylle Magtalas
