The American defended four match points in the second set to win the women's final 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 in scorching hot Melbourne. This feat not only saw Capriati win her first Grand Slam, but also break a record that had stood for 113 years.
After the match she said: "I really don't know how I managed to win today. I kept fighting. On those match points when I was down I just went for it."
Earlier in the match Capriati's intensity showed when she attacked the umpire and then screamed at the crowd. After she composed herself she first dropped four games of the set only bounce back and save four match points.
