Rousey defied her family’s expectations

The 28-year-old Rousey began her fighting career in the world of Judo where she found considerable success, including a bronze medal at the the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

However, after her success at the event Rousey wanted something different and pondered a number of different career options before deciding to try her hand at MMA.

Rousey's mother concedes that she did not think favourably of her daughter's decision.

“I told her that going into MMA was the stupidest idea that she ever had come up with, and that was really saying something because she already had plenty of dumb ideas in her life,” Rousey's mother, AnnMaria De Mars, told “I just couldn’t see a future in it.”

Thankfully for the MMA community De Mars was proven wrong.

After ten fights Rousey remains unbeaten, but it's not only in the ring that Rousey has achieved success, with the American landing a number of endorsement deals and her place in a handful of Hollywood blockbusters.

“I imagined something, but not like this,” Rousey said of her MMA fame.

“But I had the attitude that even if there wasn’t something there, you could still find a way to build it and then achieve it. People like to call me arrogant or cocky or say that I think too much of myself. But I’ve worked so hard to reach this point. And I think it’s audacious for anyone to believe that I should think less of myself.”
