There has long been talk of Jones moving up a weight and facing off against Velasquez, with the 27-year-old thoroughly dominant in his division. Jones' record of 21-1 speaks for itself, with his lone defeat coming as a result of a disqualification.
Next on the agenda for Jones is a title defence against Anthony Johnson, but many, including Jones, are already looking beyond that. And should he fight Velasquez, Jones has little doubt about how he will perform.
"I don't know when I'm going to move up in weight. I've entertained the thought of going to heavyweight so many times, and I think right now with all due respect to Anthony (Johnson), I believe I'll win that fight and get into super fights and rematches," Jones said at a news conference.
"But if I do go to heavyweight or when I do go to heavyweight, I do believe I have the skill set to beat Cain."
While it may all by hypothetical, Jones is confident that the fight would live up to its billing.
"When it happens, it will be a good one," he asserted.
