Croatian striker dies after taking ball to chest

AFC U-23 Championship Qualifiers: Indonesia announce provisional 24-man squad

A Croatian footballer collapsed and died during a match at the weekend after being struck in the chest by the ball.

Bruno Boban, who played for third-tier side Marsonia, fell to the ground shortly after the ball smashed into his chest around 15 minutes into the match against Slavonija Pozega.

The referee called for help and emergency workers eventually arrived.

They spent around an hour trying to revive the 25-year old striker before he was pronounced dead on the pitch.

The cause of death has not yet been announced.

Boban’s death comes just three weeks after the sudden death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori sent shockwaves through the football world.

Astori passed away in his sleep the night before a Serie A match with Udinese.
