Pellegrini: City will fight on

The City boss feels criticism of his side’s performances in recent weeks is wide of the mark, as he feels they are still ‘doing well’ despite being six points adrift of leaders Chelsea, who also have a game in hand.

But Pellegrini says City have to maintain their standards to ensure they are in position to take advantage of any slip-ups from Jose Mourinho’s side, and at the very least maintain their second position.

City will look to bounce back from their surprise Premier League defeat at Burnley last week against West Brom on Saturday, when they look for only their fourth win in 13 games in all competitions.

“Second position in a whole year I don’t think is a disaster. We are not in??eighth, ninth or 10th. Only Chelsea has done better than our team,” Pellegrini said.

“We try to??play the last nine games in our best performance so we don’t depend on what??Chelsea will do. We will try at least to keep second position and pressure??Chelsea in the next nine games.

“Everyone can say what they want to??say or what think will happen.

“The most important thing for me is to work in the same way we are doing??because I think we are doing well. I am not just talking about my work. In less??than two years, I think it was a very good year last year to win both titles.

“Maybe other people don’t think how difficult it can be to do it because in??England we have very strong teams in every year.

“It is not easy to make a double. This year all of us want to win the title??every year. I don’t think it is possible to do it (every year) but I think it is??possible to fight to the end.”

Pellegrini is also determined the City mount a stronger challenge in the Champions League in future seasons, after seeing them knocked out at the last-16 stage by Barcelona for the second year running on Wednesday.

“To try to win the Champions League is a??target in the future. Every team that wants to be a big team must win the??Champions League but it is not easy to win it,” he added.

“Real Madrid went 32 years without winning one, Barcelona 32 years. A lot of??big teams – so it is difficult. It is very important to live in the domestic??game. You must see your domestic games and try always to be involved always for??the title every year.”
