Senators continue play-off push

Goaltender Andrew Hammond is now 13-0-1 as a starter for the Senators after making 22 saves as Ottawa won a sixth game in a row.

The Bruins, meanwhile, were handed a 2-1 loss by the Florida Panthers as Brandon Pirri scored the only goal in a shootout.

The action was all in the second period between the Minnesota Wild and the St Louis Blues at the Xcel Energy Center with the visitors running out 6-3 winners against the team they might well play in the first round of the play-offs.

An epic encounter in Alberta went the way of the Edmonton Oilers, who squeezed past the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 at Rexall Place.

Six goals in the first period left the scoreline locked at 3-3 and, after Michael Raffl cancelled out Jordan Eberle’s second-period goal, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fired an overtime winner.

Rene Bourque scored twice, including the overtime winner, as the Columbus Blue Jackets downed the Calgary Flames 3-2 and the Vancouver Canucks dominated the Los Angeles Kings at their own Staples Center to claim a comfortable 4-1 success.

The Montreal Canadiens edged the San Jose Sharks 2-0, the Winnipeg Jets thwarted the Washington Capitals 3-0 and the New York Islanders claimed a local derby victory over the New Jersey Devils by the same scoreline.

The New York Rangers were also in action and claimed a 3-2 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes thanks to Mats Zuccarello’s shootout score.

There were big wins for the Dallas Stars and the Nashville Predators, who claimed respective 4-0 and 3-0 victories over the Chicago Blackhawks and the Buffalo Sabres, while the Pittsburgh Penguins got the better of the Arizona Coyotes to triumph 3-1 in Glendale.
