Uggla caps Nationals’ comeback

The Nationals twice trailed by eight runs, but they ate into their opponents lead thanks to a three-run home run from Jose Lobaton, a solo strike from Denard Span, a two-run triple from Dan Uggla and a Reed Johnson pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh.

And victory was completed by former Atlanta player Uggla in the ninth as he homered to secure three RBIs and the win against his former side.

The New York Yankees extended their lead in the American League East to three games after a 4-2 win over nearest rivals the Tampa Bay Rays as Brian McCann doubled twice and drove in three runs. Elsewhere in the division the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 11-8.

NL Central leaders the St Louis Cardinals took a liking to Severino Gonzalez, who made his first start but gave up seven runs in an 11-5 loss for the Philadelphia Phillies, while in the battle between the division’s two bottom sides, the Cincinnati Reds beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2.

Mike Pelfrey starred with the ball as he allowed just two runs and threw seven strikeouts to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers, the first over their divisional rivals this season.

The Miami Marlins beat the New York Mets for the first time in their last six meetings as they ran out 4-3 winners at Marlins Park as Steve Cishek, who surrendered a three-run homer in the ninth inning to Daniel Murphy in the Mets’ 3-1 victory on Monday, collected his second save in four opportunities.

The AL East-leading Houston Astros won their fifth game in a row as they beat the San Diego Padres 14-3 with home runs from Evan Gattis, Chris Carter and George Springer.

Kendrys Morales’ three-run homer in the seventh helped the Kansas City Royals to an 11-5 win over the Cleveland Indians after Brandon Moss’ three-run shot had given the Tribe a lead.

Travis Wood struck out nine while Dexter Fowler registered three hits and two RBIs as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2, while the Seattle Mariners were 2-1 winners over the Texas Rangers.

The Oakland Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-2, the Arizona Diamondbacks won 12-5 against the Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants were 2-1 winners over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

And for the second night in a row the Chicago White Sox at the Baltimore Orioles was postponed due to riots near the Orioles’ Camden Yard ground.

The pair are set to face off tomorrow, albeit behind closed doors.
