Bahrain Grand Prix: Race as it happened

Follow all the action from race day at the Bahrain Grand Prix live right here.

00:50 Thank you for joining us for an edge-of-the-seat Bahrain Grand Prix! The result was in doubt until the very last moment, but with Ferrari on top again, everything is delicately poised heading into the race in Russia in two weeks time. Please do join us for that, but until then, take care! Bye for the moment.

00:45 Here’s the rest of the order for you:

00:40 Checkered flag! The Ferrari of Vettel is on the final lap! He rounds the final corner, he charges over the line, he wins! Vettel is King of the Desert! A fighting effort from Hamilton sees him come home second, with Bottas a distant third!

00:35 into the final moments now…

00:33 It’s all heating up…

00:30 Marcus Ericsson has pulled over to the side of the circuit with a broken gearbox. No Safety Car for the moment though…

00:28 Mercedes are certainly telling their man to give it everything…

23:49 Hamilton passes Bottas for P2! Things aren’t going as well as they could for the Finn…

23:44 Order update! Meanhile Raikkonen is past Massa and into P4.

23:39 Lewis Hamilton has been given a five-second time penalty for driving unnecessarily slowly while heading into the pits. Meanwhile, Vettel has been busy out front…

23: The Safety Car comes in, let’s roll! Vettel leads the pack away, followed by Bottas, Ricciardo and Hamilton! Hamilton passes the Red Bull into turn one for P3!

23:30 Images of that Stroll/Sainz incident for you…

23:28 Oh no! Verstappen’s brakes have failed and the Red Bull has hit the barriers! Stroll has also stopped out on circuit after a collision with Sainz. Safety car! Most of the cars have stopped, but Vettel is the new race leader!

23:25 It’s getting tense in the front…meanwhile Vettel has pitted and come put in P12. Aggressive stuff by Ferrari!

23:22 Disaster for Kevin Magnussen! The Haas man has lost power and pulled off the circuit. His day is done.

23:18 The top five are covered by only three seconds. Meanwhile, Raikkonen, who had a bad start, has passed Massa for P6. Can the Finn close up now?

23:14 The order for you after the opening exchanges…

23:09 Vettel stalks Bottas into turn one, but the Finn is still ice cool under pressure…

23:04 One, two, three, four, five……GO! We’re racing! Good start for Bottas, he holds the lead! Vettel is past Hamilton and into P2!

22:53 Stoffel Vandoorne’s McLaren is still in the garage with a power unit issue. It doesn’t look like the Belgian will take the start.

22:50 The sun has set, its almost time!

22:43 Weather for you: Track temperature 31 degrees, air temperature 25 degrees. A fair bit cooler than yesterday then.

22:37 The pitlane is open, the cars have made their way to the grid!

22:30 30 minutes until the lights go out! Since the race starts shortly after the sun sets in Bahrain, the track will be cooling as time passes. Could this throw up some surprises for the teams in terms of strategy?

22:26 Will the old guard add to their successes in today’s race, or will a new name join the list of Bahrain podium finishers?

22:20 So, for a bit of a recap: Mercedes were the quickest in qualifying by a fair margin, but the Ferrari appears to be strong in race trim, and perhaps kinder on its tyres than the silver car. Red Bull had a good day yesterday, with Daniel Ricciardo managing to out-pace Kimi Raikkonen to start P5.

22:15In addition, we should note the efforts of Sauber’s Pascal Wehrlein. The German missed the first two races of the season due to injury, but was impressive in qualifying, progressing to Q2 despite the modest equipment he was piloting. Wehrlein came under some criticism for not racing in Australia and China, but his efforts in qualifying will have silenced some of his detractors.

22:10 A little further back, Nico Hulkenberg will start in P7 for Renault, while teammate Jolyon Palmer starts in P10. This is the first time that the French outfit have seen both their cars progress to Q3 since returning to the sport as a full team in 2016. Can they bring home some points today?

22:05 Valtteri Bottas became the 5th Finn and 98th driver overall to qualify on pole yesterday. Can the Silver Arrows man convert his starting position into a first win? Or will things become a little more complicated along the way?
