Reece has endured a torrid start to the season and has only managed to score 60 runs in seven innings at an average of 8.57.
The injury is reported to have occurred after Reece was dismissed for only two in Lancashire’s second innings against Gloucestershire earlier this week, a game the visitors won by 91 runs at Old Trafford.
???He has broken his hand,??? said head coach and cricket director Ashley Giles. ???He is going to be out for a long time, which is unfortunate. But it is an opportunity for someone else.
???I don???t know how he has done it. I am going to have to look into that situation and let you know. I need to speak to him and get to the bottom of it.???
Reece’s injury will leave a gap at the top of the Lancashire order, and they also need a replacement for Australia bowler Peter Siddle, whose pre-Ashes stint came to an end against Gloucestershire.
But Giles hopes it might not be the last the county sees of Siddle in 2015, adding: “It’s a possibility, he’ll be in the country.
“I hope he plays a part in the Ashes, but if he doesn’t he might be raring to have a few more overs so we’re probably in the pound seats as he’s been with us.
“He’s been fantastic. He’s only been here for four games but he’s had a really big impact on the dressing room and on the field.”
