Monroe vows to beat Golovkin

Monroe Jr heads into the fight against knockout specialist ‘Triple G’ as a massive underdog, with no fighter lasting the distance with the Kazakh for almost seven years.

But Monroe Jr is the great nephew of Willie “The Worm” Monroe, one of only three men to defeat ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler in the legendary middleweight’s 67-fight career.

And the latest in the line of fighting Monroes believes it is his destiny to become middleweight champion of the world.

“Once God is for you, no man can be against you,” Monroe Jr said.

“The best of men at their best are still just men. He puts his pants on the same way I do, one leg at a time, so I can???t let other people deter me from what I???m going to do – and that is become middleweight champion.

“At the end of the day, I want to be remembered as one of the best ever to put on a pair of gloves, and these are the fights you have to win to do that.

“It’s happened time and time again in boxing history. Everyone tells a guy he has no shot and he’s going to get killed, but the guy doesn’t listen and believes in himself and shocks everyone.

“I believe I’m here for a reason and that reason is to win this fight. I want to make my stand and become something special.

“The key to any fight is imposing your will and being in control. I’m going to enjoy the opportunity and the moment and go out there and do what I know I’m meant to do.”

Despite beating Hagler, who went unbeaten for 20 fights after the loss, Willie “The Worm” never got a shot at the world middleweight title.

“I was aware at an early age of what he did,” Monroe Jr said of his great uncle.

“I didn’t know Marvin Hagler until I had gotten older and started seriously studying boxing, but it was a great accomplishment and solidified the family name in the sport.”
