Miller falls short as Braves win

Pitcher Shelby Miller came tantalisingly close to achieving the first no-hitter of the season as the Atlanta Braves earned a 6-0 win against the Miami Marlins on Sunday.

Five runs in the fifth inning sent the Braves on their way to victory at Marlins Park before Miller was denied a unique personal milestone when Justin Bour singled in the ninth inning and team-mate Dee Gordon followed suit.

The defeat was Miami’s third in succession and 22nd of the season after afterwards the Marlins announced they had parted company with manager Mike Redmond and bench coach Rob Leary.

Danny Espinosa and Bryce Harper both hit three-run homers as the Washington Nationals overcame the San Diego Padres 10-5 to win their third game in a row.

Espinosa went yard in the fifth inning to also send Harper and Ryan Zimmerman across home plate, while Harper repeated the feat in the seventh as Ian Desmond and Yunel Escobar also scored.

Evan Longoria and James Loney combined for six hits and six RBIs as the Tampa Bay Rays earned an 11-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt hit home runs and Nori Aoki drove in three runs as the San Francisco Giants edged to a 9-8 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Darin Ruf and Maikel Franco hit home runs and Sean O’Sullivan pitched six scoreless innings as the Philadelphia Phillies triumphed 6-0 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

American League Central leaders the Kansas City Royals strolled past the New York Yankees by the same scoreline with Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez allowing the AL East division leaders just three hits across seven innings.

Noah Syndergaard struck out five and allowed just one run as National League East leaders the New York Mets earned a 5-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, while Nick Martinez was equally ungenerous as the Texas Rangers beat the Cleveland Indians by the same scoreline.

The Chicago White Sox picked up their fifth successive victory as they won 7-3 against the Oakland Athletics and the Seattle Mariners were 5-0 winners against the Boston Red Sox.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Baltimore Orioles were 3-0 victors against the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Angels respectively.

AL West pace-setters the Houston Astros overcame the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2, NL Central leaders the St Louis Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 and NL West table-toppers the Los Angeles Dodgers edged to a 1-0 victory against the Colorado Rockies.
