The MV Agusta Reparto Corse rider went into the afternoon race on the back of a P9 earlier in the day and he looked set for an even better finish as he found himself P6 during the early stages.
However, his home race ended when went down at the Foggy Esses, much to his frustration.
"I think the problem was forcing the issue too much," he told WorldSBK.com. "I am really frustrated. It’s been my first mistake of the year and I feel bad because I didn’t want to let anybody down.
"I got such a good start and made did some strong first laps. If I could have maintained the rhythm, I don’t think I could have stayed with Chaz (Davies) but at least that general level. As the fuel load goes down, it helps our bike a lot and normally I finish quite strongly.
"I think we could have been in for a good race, but I was pushing too hard trying to stay with Chaz [Davies] and it wasn’t to be. I made a little mistake, forcing it on entry to the chicane and bounced too much over the kerb.
"I am frustrated but, to look at the positives, we were battling with riders who have won races this year so it is good in that sense. We got the best out of what we had today, but I pushed too much."
