NHL Wrap: Capitals top Montreal

Nicklas Backstrom scored in the third period as Washington beat the Canadiens 3-2 on Saturday.

Jay Beagle and Andre Burakovsky added the other goals for the NHL-leading Capitals, for whom goaltender Braden Holtby stopped 20 shots.

Alexander Radulov and Max Pacioretty got the goals for Montreal.

Peter Budaj recorded his seventh shutout as Jeff Carter scored in overtime as Los Angeles beat the Flyers 1-0.

Budaj made 17 saves as he extended his shutout to 144 minutes, 5 seconds.

In Denver, Jarome Ignila chalked up a goal and an assist as the Avalanche recorded a rare 5-2 win over the Jets.

Matt Nieto hit two goals while Matt Duchene made three assists as Colorado snapped a nine-game losing streak. Calvin Pickard made 23 saves for the Avalanche.

Adam Lowry hit both goals for Winnipeg.

Ron Hainsey's second goal of the game after two minutes of overtime helped Carolina to a 5-4 win over New York.

Jacob Slavin, Lee Stempniak and Teuvo Teravainen also scored as the Hurricanes won a third straight game. Goaltender Cam Ward made 33 stops.

Anders Lee, Casey Cizikas, Brock Nelson and Josh Bailey scored for New York.

In Florida, Brian Boyle scored in the fourth round of the shootout as Tampa Bay edged past Anaheim 3-2.

Jonathan Drouin and Alex Killorn scored in regulation for the Lightning while Ben Bishop made 14 stops, as Tampa Bay won the shootout.

Brandon Montour and Ryan Getzlaf hit the goals for Anaheim.

Toronto broke a three-game losing streak thanks to a career-first hat trick from William Nylander as they triumphed 6-5 in Boston.

James van Riemsdyk scored the decider, his second of the game, with 1:36 left.

The win moves Toronto one point behind Boston for third place in the Atlantic Division having played five fewer games.

David Pastrnak scored two for Boston. Ryan Spooner, Patrice Bergeron and Torey Krug scored one each, the latter two from power-plays.

Frederik Andersen made 36 saves for Toronto.

New Jersey beat Columbus 5-1 off the back of two goals from Taylor Hall.

Travis Zajac added a goal and an assist.

Jacob Josefson and Seth Helgeson added the other goals while Cory Schneider made 31 saves as New Jersey won a sixth-straight game on the road.

Matt Calvert scored for Columbus.

In Buffalo, Robin Lehner completed a 37-save shutout as Buffalo beat Ottawa 4-0 to break a three-game losing streak.

Ryan O'Reilly, Sam Reinhart and Marcus Foligno grabbed the goals for the Sabres.

Lehner's shutout was the fourth of his career and first this season.

Sidney Crosby hit two goals and an assist for the Penguins as Pittsburgh beat St. Louis 4-1.

Kris Letang and Justin Schultz also scored for the Penguins.

Patrik Berglund hit the goals for St. Louis.

Trevor van Riemsdyk put in a rebound with just over four minutes left to help Chicago to a 5-3 win over the Stars in Dallas. Jonathan Toews added an empty-net goal at the death.

Corey Crawford made 31 stops for Chicago.

Petr Mrazek made 42 saves for Detroit and Mike Green got the goal as the Red Wings beat Nashville 1-0.

Mrazek made nine saves in the first period, 16 in the second and 17 in the third to record his first shutout of the season and fifth win out of five over Nashville.

Green scored with 1:30 left in the opening period.

Mikael Granlund scored three in the Minnesota Wild's 6-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks while the San Jose Sharks suffered a surprise 3-2 shootout defeat against the Arizona Coyotes.
