NHL Wrap: Panthers hand Rangers surprising defeat

The Florida Panthers secured a 3-2 shootout victory in NHL action over the New York Rangers thanks to Aleksander Barkov and Vincent Trochek scoring in the shootout at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night.

For the Panthers, James Reimer was in brilliant form making 33 saves – including two in the shootout. In normal time, Keith Yandle and Aaron Ekblad scored for the Panthers while Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad scored for the Rangers.

With 54 seconds remaining the winner was scored by Alexander Wennberg in the Columbus Blue Jackets' 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals

Washington had led twice through goals by Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin but Nick Folingo and Brandon Dubinsky were on target for Columbus to tie the game.

In the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Kings saw off the challenge of the Anaheim Ducks with a 3-2 win. The Kings led 3-0 with three goals in the second period from Drew Doughty and a brace by Jeff Carter but in the third-period things got interesting when Antoine Vermette and Rickard Rakell pulled two goals back but the Kings managed to hold out for the win.

The Carolina Hurricanes won for the fourth time on the trot beating the Winnipeg Jets 3-1 thanks to powerplay goals by Victor Rask and Noah Hanifin.

The Detroit Red Wings crashed to a fourth straight defeat losing 3-2 to the Calgary Flames at Joe Louis Arena.
