NHL Wrap: Rangers suffer rare defeat

Metropolitan Division leaders the New York Rangers suffered a rare loss as the Columbus Blue Jackets made it seven home wins in a row with a 4-2 victory in the NHL on Friday.

Matt Calvert scored a shorthanded winner for the Rangers as they improved to 9-4-2, with the Rangers now 13-5-0.

The Atlantic Division’s top team, the Montreal Canadiens, were also beaten as they went down 3-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes, while Kris Letang scored an overtime winner as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Islanders 3-2 to improve to 11-4-2.

Jay Beagle’s late goal sealed a 1-0 win for the Washington Capitals over the Detroit Red Wings as Braden Holtby made 25 saves to shut out the Red Wings.

In the Western Conference, the Chicago Blackhawks continue to lead the way after a 3-2 triumph over the Calgary Flames, with Marian Hossa scoring the winner late on.
