Highlanders and Otago assistant-coach Ben Herring has joined Japan as their new defence coach on a three-year deal.
Herring joins former Highlanders head coach Jamie Joseph who currently coaches Japan.
Tony Brown, who assisted Joseph the past two seasons and will be head coach of the Highlanders next year, will be Joseph's attacking coach after next season's Super Rugby competition wraps up.
Simon Jones, who has worked with the Highlanders in the past, has also joined Japan, as the head strength and conditioning coach.
Herring, 36, will also assist former All Black Filo Tiatia, who has taken over from Mark Hammett as head coach of the Tokyo-based Sunwolves for their second season in Super Rugby.
