Ashes thrill new boy Footitt

The Derbyshire seamer has travelled with a 14-man squad to Spain this week for a training camp which will prepare them for the five-Test series against the Australians which begins on July 7.

Footitt was something of a surprise inclusion in the group, although he did take 84 county championship wickets at an average of 19.19 last summer and, as a left-armer, offers crucial variation to the bowling attack.

Every other player in Spain this week has Test experience but with new coach Trevor Bayliss using the camp as his first chance to examine the capabilities of his inherited players, Footitt feels the squad will all be starting with clean slates.

???Just because I???m in this squad doesn???t mean I???m guaranteed to play in any of the Test matches this summer but I???m going to give it a good go,??? he told Sky Sports News HQ.

???I???m going to go out there and do what I can do, try to impress and do the same things I???ve been doing for Derby for the past 18 months.

???I think it???s a blank canvas for all of the players. A new coach brings in new ideas and a new philosophy and I think it will be a great thing for English cricket.

???It???d be a great honour to represent my country and the Ashes are the biggest thing going.???

Footitt, who’s been compared to Aussie paceman Mitchell Johnson, and there are similarities, with both being left-armers and arriving relatively late on the international scene.

The Derbyshire seamer is 29 but has been a consistent wicket-taker and his elevation to the Test ranks has perhaps only be delayed by injury issues such as the one in 2013 which almost ended his career and required him to have a disc removed from his back.

???Twenty-nine isn???t old these days,??? he added. ???I think if you???re playing well then England will look at you.

???Staying fit has been the biggest thing for me. I had some injuries earlier in my career but if you stay fit you give yourself the best chance of taking wickets.

???I think the talent has always been there it???s just been a case of taking wickets.???
