Teixeira also produced an inspired fielding display as the Yankees withstood a ninth-inning fightback from the A’s.

The New York Mets cut the Washington Nationals’ lead at the top of NL East to three games thanks to a 4-1 triumph over the San Francisco Giants.

Jacob deGrom struck out 10 batters over eight scoreless innings while Eric Campbell belted the Mets’ first home run of July in the ninth inning to help his side earn a 2-1 series success against the Giants.

The Boston Red Sox earned a fourth straight victory when as they beat the Miami Marlins 6-3, while the Milwaukee Brewers came from behind to earn a 6-5 success against the Atlanta Braves.

The Chicago White Sox needed two extra innings to win 7-6 against the Toronto Blue Jays, while Johnny Giavotella’s ninth-inning single earned the Los Angeles Angels a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

Elsewhere the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Texas Rangers 7-4, the Detroit Tigers edged past the Seattle Mariners 5-4, the Minnesota Twins triumphed 5-3 against the Baltimore Orioles and the Pittsburgh Pirates were 5-2 victors against the San Diego Padres.
