Hurricanes beaten; Oilers spill

Carolina's struggles against the New York Rangers continued with the Hurricanes' comeback proving in vain as they suffered a 4-3 defeat.

The Rangers seized the initiative thanks to first-period powerplay goals from Mats Zuccarello and Oscar Lindberg, while Chris Kreider and Derick Brassard struck in the second period after Jordan Staal had pulled one back for Carolina.

Victor Rask and Chris Terry set up a tense finale but the Hurricanes could not find a leveller as they went down to an 18th loss in their last 19 meetings against the Rangers.

The New York Islanders claimed their third win in four, thanks in the main to final period goals from Cal Clutterbuck, Casey Cizikas and Ryan Strome, which helped them defeat the Colorado Avalanche 5-3.

Clutterbuck's score was particularly crucial, proving the tie-breaking score, with the teams level at 2-2 heading into the final 20 minutes.

Former Islander Blake Comeau and Jarome Iginla scored in-between efforts from Kyle Okposo and Mikhail Grabovski for New York. Nick Holden's third-period goal proved mere consolation for the Avalanche.

Garret Sparks starred with a shutout on his NHL debut as the Toronto Maple Leafs eased to a 3-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Sparks made 24 saves while Leo Komarov's goals, either side of Nazem Kadri's effort, gave the Maple Leafs, bottom of the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division, a much-needed win.

Shawn Horcoff, Rickard Rakell, Jakob Silfverberg and Corey Perry were all on-target in the Anaheim Ducks' 4-0 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks.
