The Argentina international struggled at times during in his first season in the Premier League, scoring four goals in 32 appearances after United broke the British transfer record to sign him for ??59.7million from Real Madrid.

Di Maria is reported to have told Van Gaal earlier this week that he does want a transfer away from Old Trafford this summer having failed to settle in Manchester. The United boss told the 27-year-old he should stick it out for at least another season, but he does not wish to keep an unhappy player and may reluctantly allow him to join Paris Saint-Germain if he can get Edinson Cavani in return.

Van Gaal was asked about Di Maria’s future at a press conference in Seattle on Wednesday to mark the start of United’s pre-season tour of the United States, and was unable to provide any certainty about his future either way.

“We shall see,” Van Gaal said of??Di Maria, who is not part of United’s touring party as he is on extended leave after spending part of the summer playing for his country in the Copa America.

“In football, it is a process, as I have said many times before in press conferences. It’s not clear in one day.

“It’s a process for Angel Di Maria, it’s a process for Manchester United and we shall see.

“But he is still a member of Manchester United and he has said to me he will come on July 25.”
