Rain frustrates Australia

Having declared overnight on 413-9, following unbeaten centuries for openers David Warner and Shaun Marsh, the tourists had hoped to get some overs into the bowlers on the fringe of their first XI, with Peter Siddle, Pat Cummins and Fawad Ahmed all eager to impress.

The rain held off before lunch, allowing Cummins to claim his first wicket – Hamish Rutherford nicking behind for 14 – before Ben Slater (20) was caught off Shane Watson to leave Derbyshire 55-2.

But while the Australians were economical – Siddle conceding just eight runs in his six overs – Wayne Madsen and Scott Elstone saw the hosts to lunch without further setback and they were 81-2 when the rain started to fall.

And with the weather set in, the umpires had no option but to call play off for the day at 3pm.
