Women’s Ashes hit by rain

Wet weather had been forecast in Worcester on Sunday and the signs were ominous early doors when the rain started falling around 8am.

The rain intensified around the time play was scheduled to begin at 10.30am and despite briefly stopping shortly after midday the wet weather continued after lunchtime.

A 20-over match would have had to begin at 3.55pm in order to get a game in and shortly before 2pm umpires Martin Saggers and Alex Wharf decided there was not enough time to complete a match with more rain forecast.

An ECB statement read: “As a result of heavy rainfall in Worcester today the 3rd Royal London Women???s One-Day International between England and Australia has been abandoned, and will now be played in its entirety tomorrow, Monday 27th July, at New Road.

“This is in accordance with the ICC Women???s Championship Playing Conditions, which state that in the event of any ICC Women???s Championship match not being completed on the scheduled date, it will be played or completed on a reserve day.”
