Australia ‘ready for Bairstow’

Bairstow has been called into the line-up in place of Yorkshire team-mate Gary Ballance, who was struggling for form.??

Ian Bell moves up the order and will bat at No 3 on his home ground of Edgbaston, with Joe Root at No 4 and Bairstow No 5.

Bairstow averages over 100 in county cricket this season, but Clarke says the tourists are ready for him.

???I think he???s a really good player, hence his opportunity to get another chance for England. He???s an attacking player, likes to play his shots. He has performed well in county cricket this year,??? Clarke said.

???We have looked at footage in the lead up to this Test match. We know where we have to bowl, we just have to have the discipline to put the ball there consistently and again – execute our skills.

???Like all the batters, if he gets on top, he???s an aggressive player. He???s been batting well so he???s full of confidence.??

???I would hope that the attack he???s about to face is a little bit different to what he???s faced in county cricket though.

???But in saying that he comes in with form under his belt – he can only score runs against who he is playing. We???re going to have to bowl well.???

Bell may be one of England???s most experienced batsmen but he is under immense pressure for his place, having struggled for runs all year.

Clarke admits he is a fan of the Warwickshire batsman, and does not think the move up to No 3 will affect him.

???Bell has been a class player for a long period of time. He???s played a lot of cricket,??? he said. ???So I don???t think it will bother him, moving up to No 3, playing on his home ground. [England opener] Adam Lyth might feel a little bit more pressure because he hasn???t played the amount of Test cricket as someone like Belly.

“Bell is a great fella – he???s a hell of a player. He???s been extremely successful for England over a long period of time. Whether he makes runs in this Test or not, I???m sure it???s not the end of his career. He???s shown his class, scored a lot of hundreds. After this series, I???d like to see him score 20 more hundreds – but in this series I want to limit his runs.

???It???s not about targeting someone though, it???s just about executing your skills. If we get a chance, hang on to it, because they are good players. It you let it slide then they are going to make you pay.

“Hopefully that wicket has got as much grass on it as it did yesterday. I think you will see plenty of wickets fall – in both teams – if that is the case.”
