Islanders edge out city rivals

Kyle Okposo made sure that the New York Islanders enjoyed bragging rights over city rivals the Rangers after scoring the only goal in the shootout in a 2-1 NHL victory on Wednesday night.

John Tavares' powerplay goal put the Islanders ahead midway through the second period, although their goaltender Jaroslav Halak had his net breached when Viktor Stalberg levelled six minutes later.

But Halak made 33 saves over the course of the match, including overtime, and made a further three crucial stops during the shootout, leaving Okposo to seal the narrowest of victories.

Jordan Eberle's shootout goal ensured the Edmonton Oilers edged a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Mark Letestu and Matt Hendricks gave the Oilers a goal lead, only for the Bruins to peg them back on both occasions through Torey Krug and Zdeno Chara, although it would not matter as Eberle sealed the win for Edmonton.

Drew Stafford's brace helped turn a deficit into a lead, while third period goals from Mark Scheifele, Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little and Anthony Peluso lifted the Winnipeg Jets to a 6-1 victory over the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs.

Jonathan Marchessault's powerplay goal with less than four minutes remaining gave the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks.
