Russia's Margarita Gasparyan claimed her first WTA title on Sunday when she defeated Romanian qualifier Patricia Maria Tig 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 in the Baku Cup final in Azerbaijan.
Tig beat top seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semis and but failed to display that form in the first set of the final. She looks set for a straight sets defeat when Gasparyan took a 5-4 lead in the second set, but managed to final back and force a decider.
In the third set Gasparyan was clearly stronger and Tig looked to have run out of steam. She offered little resistance as the Russian surged to victory.
Gasparyan always looked the more likely to win and did just that by recording her first competition win on the WTA tour
