Steve Stricker has been named as the third assistant captain in the USA’s President’s Cup team despite making just eight starts this year after undergoing surgery in December.
Stricker joins Fred Couples and Davis Love III as assistants to team captain Jay Haas, and will travel with the squad to Incheon, South Korea in October.
“I’m honored that Jay asked me to join the U.S. team as one of his captain’s assistants,” Stricker said in a statement.
“I absolutely love the team atmosphere of the Presidents Cup and would have been sad to miss out on it for the first time in a decade, especially on such a momentous occasion as the event being played in Asia for the first time.”
Stricker was a playing member of the team in 1996, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013, and helped the side to victory over the International Team on all five occasions.
He also helped America claim the 2008 Ryder Cup and was a team member in 2010 and 2012 when Europe claimed victory.
The 48-year-old will continue his comeback from surgery at the US PGA Championship next week. Haas said that Stricker could still make the President’s Cup as a playing member if he finds form before October.
